What to Expect – Orthopedics

If pain from bone and joint problems is wearing you down, we can help.

We’re committed to caring for you as a person, not just a diagnosis. That means answering all your questions, providing a listening ear and treating you like a member of our family.

Supportive care from start to finish

From your first visit through treatment and recovery, expect us to support every step you take. Our team coordinates your care, arranging for tests and procedures, consulting with other specialists and collaborating on the treatment that’s right for you. We’re available to help you navigate paperwork, insurance and billing.

Planning for joint replacement surgery

If you’re having joint replacement surgery, we’ll be by your side all the way, focused on the goal of returning you to regular activities at home as quickly as possible. In many cases, your care begins with “prehabilitation,” education and care that prepare you and your family for surgery and next steps.

Rehabilitation

Following surgery, rehabilitation begins at your bedside to get you up and moving. Most patients are able to walk the day of or the day after surgery.

Rehabilitation is essential to rebuild strength, endurance, flexibility and range of motion in your new joint. Physical and occupational therapy take place in hospital-based gyms and centers. Once you’re discharged, you’re scheduled for rehabilitation on an outpatient basis.

Going home

Thanks to advances in surgery and our integrated approach to rehabilitation, most patients with total hip and knee replacements stay in the hospital less than two days. Whenever possible, we’ll help you go straight home with support from home health and follow-up services. If you need to move to an interim facility while you recover, we’ll help with planning and transition.

Bundled Medicare payment programs

Some of our hospitals are participating in a Medicare initiative called the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model. CJR “bundles” the payment of all services during the hospitalization for joint replacement surgery and 90 days after discharge. This approach is designed to improve the coordination of your care and does not change the way bills are submitted and paid.

Hospitals participating in CJR will partner more closely with orthopedic surgeons, develop a navigator program to follow patients for 90 days and create a network of preferred providers for home health and skilled nursing to ensure the highest quality of care following surgery. See the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) Collaborator Selection Criteria policy.
