If you suspect you may have a digestive health issue, schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor. Symptoms of digestive health issues often are similar to those of common conditions your doctor may treat. The earlier an issue is caught, the greater the chance it can be treated successfully.
Before meeting with your doctor, it is helpful to prepare by gathering information:
If your doctor suspects you have a digestive health issue, you may be referred to a gastroenterologist, a doctor with advanced training in digestive conditions. Many insurance plans require a referral from a primary care doctor after an initial visit. The gastroenterology specialist (GI doctor) may suggest additional tests, such as stool samples, X-rays or an endoscopy to diagnose your condition.
One of the most common tests is a colonoscopy, which generally is recommended when you reach age 50 as preventive screening for colorectal cancer.
