St. Vincent Hosts Robotic Surgery Demonstration for Advancements in Lung Cancer Detection and Treatment

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, accounting for 25 percent of all cancer deaths.  Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Unfortunately, most lung cancer is found only after symptoms occur.  During November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, St. Vincent is raising awareness about advancements in robotic technology that can allow for lung cancer to be identified in the initial stages, when treatments can be more effective. St. Vincent recently performed its first robotic-assisted bronchoscopy for a minimally invasive biopsy of the lung, using a new robotic technology now available at the hospital.   

 On Monday, November 21, the St. Vincent lung cancer team hosted a robotic surgery demonstration, showcasing two robots used for lung cancer procedures at the hospital. High school students from the Medical Careers at the Billings Career Center were in attendance to learn about the cutting-edge robotic technology and how St. Vincent teams are utilizing it in lung cancer care. In addition to observing a demo, students had a hands-on experience with the equipment.  For those who meet the criteria, annual cancer screenings can help find lung cancer at the initial stages. Below are the criteria for candidates for lung screening:  

•   Age 50-77  
• At least a 20-pack year smoking history (two pack per day for 10 years or 1 pack per day for 20 years)  
• Current smoker or have smoked in the past 15 years
