St. Vincent Helps Refuel Blood Supply

On March 16, St. Vincent Healthcare held a blood drive that was open to all associates and the community. Amidst the prevention efforts for the novel coronavirus, the state of Montana is at a dire need for blood donations. Vitalant and other blood centers nationwide urged healthy individuals to donate blood and organizations to maintain scheduled blood drives to ensure patients have the lifesaving blood they need. A group of dedicated donors from our community and organization took charge on Monday and donated an impressive amount of blood.

In total, there were 75 attendees (66 who were eligible), which amounted to 75 red blood cell units and 2 units of plasma. These donations could potentially save 227 lives.

"All blood types are needed during this time," said Melissa Siemsen, Blood Management Coordinator. "It's the blood on the shelves that helps during an emergency. I am so proud of our turn out for this drive."

As an incentive to encourage participation in the drive, the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation pledged to donate three 55" flatscreen televisions and five $50 gift cards.

"St. Vincent Healthcare is humbled by the turnout that we saw from our associates and our community in responding to this critical community need," said Ty Elkin, Executive Director of the Foundation. "While our focus is currently on the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 throughout our community, we cannot lose sight of the ever-present needs of our trauma victims, cancer patients, and others that rely on adequate blood inventories for treatment."
