Childhood sleep disorders
The Sleep Center works with Pediatricians who refer children to the Sleep Center for testing of sleep-related symptoms, which are not only a problem for the young patient but the entire family.
The care of children with sleep disorders demands special expertise. There are a variety of pediatric sleep disorders, many of which exhibit symptoms such as:
- Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Attention deficit hyperactivity
- Irritability during the day
- School difficulties
- "Odd" sleep behaviors
These symptoms may indicate the need for a sleep study to diagnose a childhood sleep disorder. St. Vincent Healthcare has sleep rooms just for children. The technical staff at the St. Vincent Physician Network - Sleep Center receives special training in performing pediatric sleep studies. Studies are now performed in children as young as six to nine months of age. The designated pediatric sleep study rooms, located on the SVH Pediatric floor, are designed for a kid-friendly environment, mindful of childhood fears.
