Our Heart Care Team

Heart and vascular conditions require specialized knowledge to treat. You may receive care from our award-winning surgical teams, cardiologists, nurses with special training in heart care, rehab specialists and patient experience navigators.

General cardiologist

Cardiologists treat a wide range of problems that affect your heart and blood vessels. They are usually the first doctor you see after being diagnosed with a heart-related condition. Depending on the diagnosis, your cardiologist may refer you to an even more specialized cardiologist.

Interventional cardiologist

Our interventional cardiologists specialize in minimally invasive procedures to treat heart or heart valve disease. Our interventionists perform procedures such as:

  • Angioplasty – Technique in which a small, thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the artery to widen it
  • Stenting – Inserting a small, wire mesh tube into a diseased coronary artery to hold it open
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) – Technique in which a catheter is used to place a mechanical valve in the place of a damaged aortic valve

Electrophysiologist

This doctor has advanced training in diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms. Electrophysiologists determine whether you are at risk for cardiac arrest by completing diagnostic testing such as:

  • Electrophysiology study – Sends signals to the heart to see if you develop a rapid heartbeat
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) – Monitors the heart’s electrical activity and translates it into line tracings on paper

Cardiac and vascular surgeons

A cardiac surgeon focuses on heart bypass surgery or other types of open-heart surgery while vascular surgeons are trained to operate on blood vessels that are related or connected to the heart, but outside of it.
