The best treatment for cancer is prevention. SCL Health can help you reduce your risks and take steps to prevent cancer. If cancer is a possibility, we’re committed to detecting it early when it’s most treatable.
We perform tests and screenings with a personal touch and make sure you’re prepared for every step of your care.
Reduce your risk of cancer
Your family and personal health history can affect your risk of getting cancer. It’s important to share this information with your doctor to determine if you need special or more frequent cancer screenings.
Genetic testing and counseling
SCL Health offers genetic testing and counseling services to identify your risk of hereditary cancers, often through testing that looks for specific gene mutations. A genetic counselor will review your results and discuss recommendations for preventing cancer or managing your risks.
Screenings for early detection
We offer advanced tests and procedures that look for early signs of cancer. Common cancer screenings include:
We also offer a range of screenings for specific cancers. Recommendations about the timing and frequency of screenings are available from the American Cancer Society.
Advanced techniques for diagnosing cancer
Making a cancer diagnosis can be challenging, as symptoms differ by cancer type, location and size. If your doctor suspects you have cancer, he or she may order one or more tests, which vary by cancer type.
Biopsy
One of the most common diagnostic tests is a biopsy, during which tissue or fluid is carefully removed for examination by a pathologist. Your doctor will determine which of these biopsy types is right for your situation:
- Needle biopsy – Captures tissue in a syringe
- Surgical biopsy – Tissue is surgically removed through an incision in the skin
- Closed biopsy – A less-invasive surgical procedure utilizing microscopic cameras
Medical imaging
An accurate cancer diagnosis depends on advanced imaging techniques and equipment in the hands of skilled professionals. Our experienced team of radiologists, nurses and technicians treat you with courtesy and respect, ensure a safe testing environment and focus on quick, accurate results so you can make informed decisions about your care.
Diagnostic imaging tests for cancer include mammograms, ultrasounds, chest X-rays, CT scans, PET/CT scans and MRIs.

Blood tests
Blood tests are used to diagnose certain cancers, such as leukemia. They’re also used to help inform your doctor about what your body is doing. Blood samples may show cancer cells, proteins or other substances, or they may give insight into how well your organs are functioning to tell if they've been affected by cancer.
