Saint Joseph Hospital

Life Outside the Hospital

The Department of OB/GYN plans several activities throughout the year for our resident physicians. To start the incoming intern class off in style, the hospital hosts an annual "Shrimp Party" where attendings, residents and hospital staff welcome our new interns. In September, the department hosts an overnight retreat for all residents and attendings held at a nearby mountain resort. During this Annual Fall Resident Retreat, residents and attendings have the opportunity to spend time together outside of work and learn more about each other in a relaxed and fun setting. The annual Holiday party marks a celebratory and festive season when residents, faculty and their families come together each year.

In June we celebrate the annual "Spring Fling" to celebrate the graduating Chief Residents' accomplishments and wish them and their families well as they begin their careers as OB/GYN physicians or go on to sub specialize. All four residency programs participate in Spring Fling. During this time resident physicians receive 24 hours free of work responsibilities. In the evening, each program individually hosts a ceremonial dinner accompanied by awards presented to the graduating residents. The dinner also serves as a time to show appreciation to the OB/GYN faculty physicians for their contribution to the graduating resident's education and training.

Although the residents work long hours, they also find time to have fun. Denver is a large cosmopolitan city with many diverse restaurants, shopping centers, nightclubs, museums and performing arts centers. Opportunities abound for life outside of work. The city attracts performers on a national level and hosts a variety of festive and cultural events. Live outdoor performances at the Red Rocks Amphitheater are a must treat. Denver is a professional sports lover's town as the city is home to the NFL's Denver Broncos, NBA's Denver Nuggets, MLB's Colorado Rockies and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. The beautiful city of Boulder and the University of Colorado are in close proximity to Denver. In addition, we are a short drive away from the Rocky Mountains, which boasts some of the best downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding in the nation such as Vail, Steamboat, Breckenridge, Devil's Thumb to name a few. And in the summer there is biking, camping, fishing, boating, hiking, rock climbing and just about any other outdoor activity you might be interested in.
