We like to think of our residency as a family. We love spending time together outside of work for holidays, birthdays, weddings, or just because. We are excited you are considering joining our family at Saint Joe’s for your obstetrics and gynecology training!
In the fall, we hold our annual resident retreat where residents and attendings have the opportunity to spend time together outside of work and learn more about each other in a relaxed and fun setting. In past years we have done ropes courses, rock climbing, trampoline parks, but are open to new suggestions each year. We typically also spend time in a cabin in the mountains after our scheduled activities for more festivities. During this time our residents have 24 hours free of work responsibilities and can focus on further developing their relationships and having fun.
In June we celebrate the annual "Spring Fling" in our fanciest garb to celebrate the graduating chief residents' accomplishments and wish them and their families well as they begin their careers as OB-Gyn physicians, or go on to sub-specialize. During this time resident physicians receive 24 hours free of work responsibilities. We typically spend the day poolside or in the mountains as a group, and in the evening, attend a ceremonial dinner with awards for residents and faculty. Following awards, we cut a rug with our attendings and have some time to really let loose.
Living in Colorado we love the outdoors! Denver is in close proximity to the Rocky Mountains, which boasts some of the best downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding in the nation. Many of us are avid hikers and frequently take trips to the mountains on the weekends. During the warmer months biking, camping, fishing, boating, and rock climbing are all common. On any given sunny day you may find some of us spending time together at one of Denver’s many parks a little closer to home.
Most importantly, we are all friends! As residents, we spend a lot of time together inside the hospital, but we always try to make time to have some fun together outside of the hospital as well. We know and love all the babies (human and fur) of our co-residents, and we love to spend time with everyone’s families. Sunday brunch is an important part of our weekend night call shift traditions and a great opportunity to recap and unwind with your fellow residents and our beloved L&D nurses! You may find us having weekend game nights at the home of one of our crew or celebrating holidays at each other’s homes. Each year we also try to give each class at least one weekend off together to take a weekend trip for some bonding time.
