The General Surgery Residency Program at Saint Joseph Hospital is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM) and Rocky Vista University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RVU-SOM). We offer third year clerkships to CUSOM and RVU-SOM students.
Students are assigned to one of the general surgery services during their clerkship, which is composed of at least one or two PGYI residents, one PGYIII, and the Chief Surgical Resident. Duties include pre-operative evaluations of patient problems, assistance in the operating room, post-operative orders, and follow-up while the patient is in the hospital. Students also attend clinic on a rotational basis with their team. Student work is evaluated by the General Surgery Residency Program director, the attending staff, and residents from their team, which is then forwarded to their medical school.
Surgery sub-internship application
We offer sub-internships to fourth year medical students nationwide. Applicants are required to meet the same criteria for our ERAS application for residency.
The following information is required for your application to be accepted for review:
- A curriculum vitae
- Personal statement
- Written approval from the dean of your medical school and should list your class rank
- USMLE scores (minimum 220)
- One letter of recommendation
- Proof of up-to-date immunizations
We also ask that applicants provide proof of professional liability insurance. Many medical schools now provide this insurance coverage for students who serve electives away from school, and verification of such must come from the dean's office.
Housing and parking
Housing at personal expense is often available adjacent to the hospital at the Saint Christopher Inn, 720-917-9900. Parking is included.
