General Surgery

You might have surgery, whether you need it or you elect to have it, for many reasons. Ideally we exhaust all other treatment options, then we explore surgery together. Surgery can help you keep your active lifestyle. It will get you back to enjoying the best quality of life possible.

General surgery treats several parts of the body. Abdominal surgeries present the highest amount of general surgeries including:

  • Abdominal surgery, for the appendix, gallbladder, liver, spleen, and pancreas
  • Digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and anus
  • Hernia repairs

We also use general surgery to treat:

  • Skin
  • Soft tissue diseases throughout the body
  • Thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck

General surgeons rarely treat the kidneys / urinary bladder, the male prostate or female reproductive organs.

We use surgery as a treatment for both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions.

Surgery options

We can, and like to, complete most surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques. However, some conditions may require a more traditional treatment approach, like open surgery. Whenever possible, we do our surgeries as outpatient procedures, so you can go home the same day.

Depending on your diagnosis, you and your doctor will discuss which of the below surgeries are right for your condition:

Optional or elective surgery

These surgical procedures are those you choose to have and they may not be essential to continue your quality of life. We can schedule this surgery in advance as it isn't a medical emergency. Examples of optional surgery might be breast implants or the removal of skin tabs.

Required surgery

Required surgery is one that needs to occur to ensure your quality of life in the future. However, the surgery does not need to be completed immediately. This means that we can schedule your surgery in advance, giving you plenty of time to prepare. An example would be hernia surgery, joint replacement or a mastectomy for breast cancer.

Urgent or emergency surgery

We use this surgery in reaction to an urgent medical reason, such as acute appendicitis, gallbladder issues or a trauma event.

Trauma surgery

Trauma surgery focuses care for those injured in a traumatic event. This might be in car, bicycle or motorcycle accident,a severe trip or fall as well as a skiing or snowboarding incident.
