Synonymous with herpes zoster infection. This viral infection causes an eruption of intensely painful sores and deep vesicles on the skin in the distribution of specific nerves (dermatomes) usually located on the trunk. Zoster results from reactivation of varicella-zoster (chickenpox) virus that has been dormant for years in dorsal root ganglia (certain nerve portions near the spinal cord).
