What causes traumatic brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) may occur after your head strikes an object, or when an object goes through your skull and damages your brain. Many TBIs occur during motor vehicle accidents. Falls, firearms, explosions and assaults also cause TBI.

Symptoms of TBI

Depending on the severity of the injury, symptoms of a traumatic brain injury may include:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Mood changes
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Trouble thinking

Diagnosing TBI

Head injuries are diagnosed with physical exams and diagnostic tests. These tests may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Electroencephalograph (EEG)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • X-rays

TBI treatments and rehabilitation
