Program Candidates and Indications

Cardiothoracic surgery may be necessary to address severe or chronic heart problems that cannot be addressed with lifestyle changes, medication or nonsurgical procedures, including patients with:

  • Valvular heart disease or infection
  • Aortic valve stenosis, blockage or insufficiency
  • Mitral valve stenosis, blockage or insufficiency
  • Coronary artery occlusion or hardening requiring bypass surgery
  • Holes in the heart or atrial septal defects
  • Atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat requiring surgical ablation
