Saint Joseph Hospital Receives 2021 Press Ganey Guardian Of Excellence Award®

Largest private teaching hospital in Denver earns national distinction as a top-performer in patient experience

Guardian of Excellence Award

Denver, Colo. – Saint Joseph Hospital has been named a 2021 Guardian of Excellence Award® winner by Press Ganey, the national leader in healthcare consumer and workforce engagement. Press Ganey recognizes Saint Joseph Hospital as a top-performing healthcare organization achieving the 95th percentile or above for performance in patient experience. This is the third year in a row Saint Joe’s has received this award.

The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award® is a preeminent, competitive achievement for leading healthcare organizations. Presented annually, the award applauds hospitals and health systems that consistently sustained performance in the top 5% of all Press Ganey clients.

“Press Ganey is honored to recognize Saint Joseph Hospital as one of the nation’s leaders in patient experience,” said Patrick T. Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer, Press Ganey. “This award reflects an unwavering commitment to earn the trust and loyalty of patients throughout unimaginable challenges. We are humbled by Saint Joseph Hospital’s incredible efforts, and their ability to adapt to the imperatives of COVID-19 on top of the increasing demand for consumerism in healthcare.”

Investments and steps taken for continuous improvement at Saint Joseph Hospital in 2021 include:

  • Participating in a formal goal-setting and results tracking program with every department in the hospital collaborating and focusing on improving patient experience together in measurable ways
  • Offering training sessions called “Connect to Why” for all associates to help ensure that creating excellent patient experiences is embedded in the organization’s culture
  • Promoting “Through Another's Eyes” behaviors that reinforce the use of empathy, understanding, active listening and other behaviors in all patient interactions
  • Collecting and acting on patient and staff feedback that drives improvement

“It is so fulfilling to be able to display our mission every day to so many patients and their loved ones in the work that all our caregivers do every single day,” said Sarah Owen, CPXP, director, Service Excellence, Quality & Safety. “Healthcare can be a scary, vulnerable and unpleasant experience for those needing care, and all our staff are able to consistently shine some light into those dark times. Being a Guardian of Excellence means ensuring that everyone in this building, whether they work here, are receiving care here, or are visiting are having an excellent experience. We are honored to not only believe that, but be validated by our patients that they feel that same excellence!”

“In one of the most challenging times in healthcare, Saint Joseph continues to shine in its pursuit of excellence for our patients as evidenced by this prestigious award,” said Katie Boemecke, Service Excellence system director. “The collective dedication to excellence can be seen in the continued improvement in percentile rankings as well as through our patients' voices.”
