St. James Healthcare and Butte-Silver Bow Health Department today released the 2020 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for Butte-Silver Bow. The document is the result of work that began in late 2019.
St. James and the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department contracted with Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC) to conduct telephone surveys with 400 residents selected at random within the community and to conduct an online Key Informant survey with key leaders, social service agencies, and physicians in Butte. PRC analyzed all the data gathered, compared it to state and national benchmarks, and also to Healthy People 2020 objectives, and then drafted a preliminary assessment document.
In late June, all the online survey participants were invited to a meeting to evaluate, discuss, and prioritize the health issues identified through the surveys. Most of Butte’s social service agencies were represented and with the information gathered at this meeting, PRC finalized the 2020 Community Health Needs Assessment.
Prioritized on scope and severity as well as the ability to impact, the top four areas identified are:
- Mental Health
- Nutrition/Physical Activity/Weight
- Heart Disease & Stroke
- Substance Abuse
“This is a great way to really understand the health needs in our community,” said Jay Doyle, President at St. James Healthcare. “As the only acute care facility in the region, St. James must ensure it is meeting the needs of the communities it serves and this assessment helps us determine exactly what our focus should be.”
Karen Sullivan, Director of the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department, said, “The information provided by this assessment is invaluable in helping my department establish priorities. Because PRC also conducted our 2014 & 2017 assessments, we are now able to compare this year’s data with the data from the previous assessments and that helps us assess the impact our programs have on the community’s health.”
The next step in the process is to develop a Community Health Improvement Plan that outlines actions that will be taken over the next three years to improve the health of the community.
The complete 2020 Community Health Needs Assessment Report is available online at: https://www.sclhealth.org/locations/st-james-healthcare/about/community-benefit/community-health-needs-assessment/
Conducted every three years, the assessment evaluates the overall health status of Butte-Silver Bow, identifies the most pressing health-related needs of the community, and helps St. James, the Health Department, and other community participants determine how to resolve some of those needs.
