Malina Long: St. James Healthcare March 2019 DAISY Award Recipient

St. James Healthcare would like to congratulate Malina Long, RN for receiving the March 2019 DAISY Award for her excellent patient care. The DAISY Award Recognizes Extraordinary Nurses and is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease.

The committee chose Malina for her commitment to being an extraordinary nurse. The nomination from a family member clearly describes her dedication to helping those in need, “She always explained his care plan and what each of his medications were and how they were helping our father. Ms. Long was organized, kind, caring, and an exemplary nurse. Thank you, Ms. Long, for taking amazing care of our father. He is now in Heaven.”

Malina has been with St. James for just over one year and is originally from North Carolina. This marks the first time she has been nominated and the first time she has been named the recipient.

“From day one here at St. James Malina has always been excellent with patients and families,” said ICU Director Cheryl Stensrud. “Her skills and demeanor are exactly what you want in a nurse, in fact, I’m not sure if I have worked with a sweeter person. We are very proud to have her part of our team and she is very deserving of the award. ”

Malina is very grateful for the recognition and knows that to have the family of a patient take the time to write the nomination letter does not happen every day. “For them to write such a heartfelt note and express their feelings means so much to me and shows just how important the patient-nurse relationship is,” said Malina. “To be part of a team that helps make a little positive difference for someone during a time when they are in the hospital and aren’t feeling their best is one of the reasons I became a nurse.
