Saint Joseph Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Colorado to offer a new, innovative medical device that allows for more accurate and precise breast cancer treatments.
The device, called BioZorb™, is a dissolvable spiral coil that Saint Joseph Hospital breast surgeons can place in the location where a cancerous tumor is surgically removed. The coil, which contains an array of six titanium markers, is then used by radiation oncologists to precisely target areas of the breast where a curative dose of radiation can then be applied to eliminate any trace cancer cells or prevent future cancer growth.
Several patients at Saint Joseph Hospital have already benefited from the use of this new device, which not only helps with radiation therapy treatment planning, but can also provide better cosmetic results thanks to the device’s lattice-like structure. Additionally, the titanium markers, which do not dissolve, provide a long-term benefit for patients who require routine mammograms as it precisely shows physicians where to look for anything out of the ordinary.
Saint Joseph Hospital is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) in recognition of its high standards for breast cancer treatment. By incorporating BioZorb™ and other advanced technologies into the hospital’s breast cancer treatment program, Saint Joseph Hospital continues to provide some of the most sophisticated treatments for breast cancer in Denver and the Rocky Mountain region.
As with any new treatment or therapy option, always consult with a physician or other qualified healthcare provider.
