Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology

Learning your child has a diabetic or endocrine condition is scary. Beyond health and well-being, you might wonder if your child will miss out on the things that make childhood special. Having the best care team possible to guide your family makes all the difference.

Specialized treatment for children and teens with hormone disorders.

SCL Health is committed to treating children and teens with acute and chronic endocrine disorders, including diabetes. Our dedicated team of physicians, nurses and specialists offer hope for children and the families of children suffering with growth disorders or other endocrine conditions.

The endocrine system produces hormones that control your child’s metabolism, growth, sleep, puberty and other important bodily functions. A glitch in the system can lead to conditions such as childhood diabetes, metabolic problems, delayed or accelerated puberty, and more.

Pediatric endocrine and hormone disorders we treat include:

  • Adrenal disorders
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Growth hormone conditions
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Metabolic disorders

Treating children and teens with diabetes at SCL Health

Type I diabetes is a condition that often develops during childhood and cannot be prevented. Type II diabetes develops most often in adults, but is becoming increasingly common in children and teens due to higher rates of obesity and sedentary lifestyles among young people.

Because puberty brings a change in hormones, both type I and type II diabetes can be more difficult to control in children and teens. In addition to hormonal changes, lifestyle management can feel unfair to children who just want to live a “normal” life like their friends who do not have diabetes.

We understand and will help you empower your child to adopt healthy diabetes management skills for life.

Your child’s care team might include endocrinologists, registered dietitians, certified diabetes educators, exercise physiologists and other providers who are specially trained to work with children.
