Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, a condition in which the body mistakenly attacks itself. With MS, communication is disrupted between the brain and the rest of the body.

MS symptoms are unpredictable. Some people with MS are nearly symptom-free, while others lose the ability to see, write, speak, or walk.

Initial symptoms of MS include:

• Blurred or double vision
• Difficulty walking
• Numbness, prickling
• Other symptoms
• Pain and loss of vision from optic nerve swelling (optic neuritis)
• Red/green color distortion

There is no cure yet for MS. The best treatment for you will depend on various factors such as how old you are, your overall health and your response to different medications. Treatments may include medicine, equipment to assist with walking and rehabilitation activities.
