What to Expect – Gastrointestinal Services

Don’t let painful, embarrassing or life-altering digestive health issues go undiagnosed or untreated. Our team of experts will get to the root of your health concerns to help you find answers and relief.

Start with your doctor

If you suspect you may have a digestive health issue, schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor. Symptoms of digestive health issues often are similar to those of common conditions your doctor may treat. The earlier an issue is caught, the greater the chance it can be treated successfully.

Before meeting with your doctor, it is helpful to prepare by gathering information:

  1. Write down the symptoms you are experiencing. Also, make note if certain foods trigger your symptoms.
  2. Make a list of relevant personal/family information. This may include family members with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), irritable bowel disorder (IBD), celiac disease or other digestive issues.
  3. Gather your personal medical information. Inform your doctor about the medications, vitamins and supplements you are taking, as well as past conditions that may be related.
  4. Write down your questions. Create a list in advance to help you remember your questions when you meet with your doctor.

See a specialist for a diagnosis

If your doctor suspects you have a digestive health issue, you may be referred to a gastroenterologist, a doctor with advanced training in digestive conditions. Many insurance plans require a referral from a primary care doctor after an initial visit. The gastroenterology specialist (GI doctor) may suggest additional tests, such as stool samples, X-rays or an endoscopy to diagnose your condition.

One of the most common tests is a colonoscopy, which generally is recommended when you reach age 50 as preventive screening for colorectal cancer.
