Neuroendocrine cancer

Neuroendocrine cancer is a type of cancer that typically arises from organs within the abdominal cavity. It affects cells that secrete proteins known as serotonin and chromogranin. Most neuroendocrine cancers grow slowly, although an aggressive form exists. Patients might report fatigue, weight loss, or even flushing.

Diagnosis and treatment

Neuroendocrine cancer requires a tissue biopsy. Once performed, it will be examined by a pathologist. Imaging via CT scan or PET scan is often required. Blood work can be helpful as well. Treatment consists of surgery and/or injectable forms of medication that block the release of the substances that cause symptoms. A newer form of treatment using a radioactive molecule that specifically attacks neuroendocrine tumors might be discussed.
