A Message from our Chief Nursing Officer
St. Vincent Healthcare has been rated for two consecutive years by CMS as a 5 Star Hospital. This recognition is the culmination of our commitment to quality care and patient safety across the organization. Nursing plays a significant role in this achievement, but it is a collaborative effort with all providers, caregivers and associates to achieve this level of excellence.
St. Vincent Department of Nursing is also on the journey for Magnet Designation. The fundamental structure for achieving Magnet is Professional Governance, which provides our front-line nurses the opportunity to take ownership for the professional practice of nursing. In order to promote participation we have restructured Professional Governance to help us align with achieving positive outcomes in our nursing sensitive indicators and patient experience. The restructure has also promoted participation in nursing research and ensured our standards of care were reflective of evidence based practice. We want every patient and family member to know that we are living up to our Nursing Vision Statement: “In one moment, one patient at a time, we can change a life.”
In 2017 we implemented a system wide Clinical Ladder program. The focus of the program was to recognize and reward nurses for their efforts in professional development and taking the lead in supporting evidence based practice. We have also developed targets year over year to increase the number of nurses completing professional certification and bachelors in nursing degrees. Both have been noted in the literature to improve patient safety and patient outcomes and promote the professionalism of nursing practice.
We hear many stories from our patients and families regarding the high level of compassionate care we deliver at St. Vincent Healthcare. Nursing is at the forefront in all clinical situations, both inpatient and ambulatory. As stated in our Vision Statement: “.....we can change a life.” Every patient and family situation we deal with lends the opportunity for us to ease suffering whether it is physical, emotional or spiritual. Let’s continue to keep the patient at the center of all we do as we carry out the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Vincent Healthcare.
We have a very bright future ahead because of the dedication you demonstrate day after day.
