Diabetes and Endocrinology

The endocrine system is a complex network of glands that produces hormones that control metabolism, growth, sleep, reproduction and other important bodily functions. A hiccup in the system can lead to conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis and disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands.

Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine conditions we treat. According to the CDC, it affects 29 million Americans. Eight million of these people don’t even know they have diabetes. This disease affects the entire body, and can cause damage to your heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves and more.

Know your risk factors for developing diabetes and symptoms so we can diagnose it early and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Symptoms of diabetes

The following are classic “red flag” symptoms for diabetes:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
  • Itchy skin

Not every person will have every symptom. Some people may experience symptoms so mild they don’t even notice them.

Talk to your doctor about your risk for developing diabetes and what you can do to lower that risk.
