People

Meet our residents, alumni, and the faculty you'll work with over the course of your time at Saint Joseph Hospital.

Our five-year General Surgery Residency program provides a broad clinical experience in all of the defined categories in general surgery. Each year five Post Graduate Year I (PGYI) categorical residents enter the five year track to prepare for General Surgery Boards, and eight PGYI preliminary residents enter their internship year before going on to a variety of specialties.

Saint Joseph Hospital has one of the busiest general surgical programs in Denver with approximately 15,000 operative procedures performed annually. Chief residents graduate with an average of 1,300 major cases. More surgery is done at Saint Joseph Hospital than can be covered by all the residents, affording residents the unique opportunity for a broad experience in the major components of general surgery. In addition to the cases scheduled in the main operating room, residents perform minor procedures in the clinic and have the opportunity to scrub cases at the same-day surgery center. Residents work directly with surgical attendings trained in general surgery and a variety of subspecialties including: vascular surgery, bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, and surgical oncology.

We are a non-pyramidal program in compliance with the RRC for surgery. By the end of training, residents are optimally positioned to pursue private practice general surgery or to continue their training in a variety of fellowships. Many of our graduates enter private-practice general surgery in medium sized cities in the western United States. About 20 percent of our graduates pursue fellowship training.
