How we diagnose and treat cancer

As part of our commitment to detecting cancer in its earliest stages, we use advanced techniques for screening and diagnosis. You also have access to genetic counseling and testing to help you understand and manage your risk of hereditary cancer. Our specialists are skilled in treating all types of cancer and create personalized care plans, which often combine treatments to give you the best outcome.

Chemotherapy and infusion

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Most patients receive chemotherapy by mouth or through an IV into a vein. Infusion therapy, also administered through a vein into the bloodstream, provides you with fluid, blood or blood products, nutritional supplements or targeted therapies, as needed.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. Radiation may be delivered by a machine into the body (external beam radiotherapy) or by placing radioactive material inside the body where it works to kill nearby cancer cells (brachytherapy). We offer a number of innovative technologies, such as TrueBeam and TomoTherapy®, which help pinpoint tumors, protect surrounding tissue and minimize side effects and discomfort.

Cancer surgery

Cancer surgery or surgical oncology is often the first line of treatment in fighting cancer. It’s used to diagnose and stage cancer and remove cancerous tumors and tissue. Many operations use minimally invasive procedures that require smaller incisions and result in quicker recovery.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy, also called biological therapy, uses your body’s natural immune system to protect you and fight cancer. For greater effectiveness, immunotherapy is often used with other cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. Immunotherapy works best to treat early-stage cancers.

Innovative technologies at SCL Health

Our medical centers use some of the most advanced technologies in treatment for cancer patients. This affords many more options for the optimal approach to treatment – especially for patients with challenging cancers of the lung, breast, abdomen or head and neck – often using the most minimally invasive procedures possible.

Clinical trials

Cancer research is one of the most active and promising fields in medical science, with new discoveries emerging on a regular basis. In many cases, we’re able to provide our patients with direct access to these innovative therapies through participation in clinical trials.

Accredited for high-quality care

When you are considering a hospital for cancer care, accreditation and outcomes matter. Our programs are recognized for excellence by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) and reviewed regularly to ensure we continue to meet the highest standards.

Accreditation is based on many factors, including our commitment to providing quality cancer care close to home and involving patients and family members in decision-making. Read about the benefits of CoC accreditation to patients and our community.
