Developmental Trauma: Implications for Clinical Work, Education, and Caregiving

The development of a child is profoundly influenced by experience. Experiences shape the organization of the brain which, in turn, influences emotional, social, cognitive and physiological activities. Insights into this process come from understanding brain development. Based on a neurosequential understanding of brain development, the Neurosequential Model (NM) is a developmentally sensitive, neurobiologically-informed approach to clinical work, education, and caregiving.

This training will begin with an overview of key principles of neurodevelopment, key functions of the brain, and the hierarchy of brain development. After discussing how trauma can affect the brain development and functioning, Dr. Perry will describe how the NM approach can help professionals and caregivers determine the strengths and vulnerabilities of a child and create an individualized intervention, enrichment, educational, and care plan matching to his/her unique needs.

Objectives

1) Provide an overview of key principles of neurodevelopment crucial for understanding the role of experience in defining functional and physical organization of the brain
2) Describe the emerging clinical and research findings in maltreated children that suggest the negative impact of abuse, neglect and trauma on the brain development
3) Outline the implications of a neurodevelopmental approach to child maltreatment within clinical, educational, and caregiving settings

April 2: Boot Camp
Denver Marriott Westminster
8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Boot Camp participants are required to attend BOTH days of training, and full enrollment for April 1 is included in the cost of the Boot Camp.

This Boot Camp will provide an accelerated, face-to-face learning experience lead by Dr. Bruce Perry, Steve Graner, and Mount Saint Vincent’s NMT and NME Mentors and Trainers.s.

Each Boot Camp will take place, in small, classroom settings with interactive, face-to-face learning experiences with peers. Boot Camp participants will attend a Boot Camp-specific breakout session on Day 1 and will also end the day with a Boot Camp meeting. Day 2 will incorporate didactic training as well as work in smaller groups with a focus on core NM concepts and skills development.

Boot Camps are conducted in retreat style fashion and are a terrific way for participants to jump-start their training process.
