St. James Healthcare and Butte-Silver Bow Health Department Release the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment

IH and BSB 2

St. James Healthcare, now part of Intermountain Health, and Butte-Silver Bow (BSB) Health Department released the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for Butte-Silver Bow.  The document is the result of work that began in 2022.

St. James and the BSB Health Department contracted with Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC) to conduct telephone surveys with 400 residents selected randomly within the community and to conduct an online Key Informant survey with key leaders, social service agencies, and physicians in Butte.  PRC analyzed all the data gathered, compared it to state and national benchmarks, and to Healthy People 2030 objectives, and then drafted a preliminary assessment document.

In November, all the online survey participants were invited to a meeting to evaluate, discuss, and prioritize the health issues identified through the surveys. These priorities included Substance Use, Mental Health, Nutrition/Physical Activity/Weight, Heart Disease & Stroke, and Infant Health Family Planning. Most of Butte’s social service agencies were represented, and with the information gathered at this meeting, PRC finalized the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment.

Five areas of opportunity identified in the Community Health Needs Assessment included:

  • Access
  • Chronic Disease
    • Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease & Stroke, Respiratory Diseases
  • Modifiable Risks
    • Nutrition, Physical Activity & Weight, Injury Violence, Infant Health & Family Planning, Sexual Health, Tobacco Use
  • Behavioral Health
    • Mental Health and Substance Abuse
  • Social Determinants and Environmental Health
Jay Doyle, President of St. James Healthcare

This is a great way to really understand the health needs in our community.  As the only acute care facility in the region, St. James must ensure it is meeting the needs of the communities it serves, and this assessment helps us determine exactly what our focus should be.

The next step in the process is to develop a Community Health Improvement Plan that outlines actions that will be taken over the next three years to improve the community's health

Karen Maloughney, Director of the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department, said, “The information provided by this assessment is invaluable in helping my department establish priorities.  Because PRC also conducted our 2014, 2017, and 2020 assessments, we are now able to compare this year’s data with the data from the previous assessments, and that helps us assess the impact our programs have on the community’s health.”

The complete 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment Report will be available online in the coming months.  Once finalized it will be posted here:

Conducted every three years, the assessment evaluates the overall health status of Butte-Silver Bow, identifies the most pressing health-related needs of the community, and helps St. James, the Health Department, and other community participants determine how to resolve some of those needs.
